Storage Tips

SERVE: The eggs can be eaten immediately after sitting in the ice bath for ten minutes.

STORE: Store the eggs in an airtight container for up to a week in the refrigerator.

FREEZE: We suggest only freezing the yolks if you want to freeze hard-boiled eggs. The whites become rubbery and inedible once they're frozen and defrosted. To freeze the yolks, place them in a freezer-safe container and freeze for 4-5 months.

DEFROST: Defrost the egg yolks in the refrigerator overnight.

Recipe FAQs

How do you tell if hard-boiled eggs have gone bad?

There are a few quick ways to tell if a hard-boiled egg is fresh or not. If, after peeling the egg, the yolk is discolored or has a rotten smell, it is spoiled, and you should discard it. You can also do the float test. If the egg floats in a bowl of water, it is still fresh. However, if the egg sinks, it is rotten and should not be consumed.

What is the 5 5 5 method for eggs in Instant Pot?

The 5 5 5 method for cooking eggs in the Instant Pot is an easy way to remember the steps of the recipe. The number five represents the estimated time for each step. Five minutes of pressure cooking, five minutes of manual release for the pressure, and five minutes in the ice bath. We have found our best results to be a slightly higher time in each category and, therefore, do not reference this method in our specific recipe directions.

How long does it take to boil eggs in an Instant Pot?

The time will vary depending on the level of doneness you want the eggs to be according to your likes. For medium-soft, set the timer for four minutes. For medium-hard eggs, set the timer for five minutes. Hard-boiled eggs need to be cooked for six minutes, and well-done eggs should be cooked for seven minutes.

Get Kids Involved

Ages 2-3: Guide your child's hands as they help carefully set the eggs in the Instant Pot. Practice counting skills as they count the number of eggs they put in the pot.

Ages 4-5: Ask your child to make the ice water bath in preparation for setting the eggs in it once they are done cooking.

Ages 6-8: Teach your child how to lock the lid on the Instant Pot, turn it on, and set the timer. They can then make this recipe on their own!

Ages 9-11: Supervise them while they prepare the entire recipe. Remember to have them read it twice before beginning the recipe.

Ages 12+: Let them prepare the entire recipe, unsupervised, while you do the happy dance in the corner!

Budget Tips

Eggs go on sale around the Easter holiday, and of course, this is the time of year to traditionally dye Easter Eggs so you can find them for as low as 99 cents if you keep an eye on the grocery ads. We buy our eggs at Costco throughout the year as we find it more cost-effective to buy them in bulk.
