How to Get Live Wallpapers on Your Chromebook
CrosPaper Takes Customization to a Whole New Level
So I did a thing. As I outlined in an older article, I've been tinkering around with Chrome Extensions in Manifest Version 3 for a few months now. My original goal was to create a simple wallpaper picking app, which I accomplished a few months ago.
But I got obsessed and started adding more and more features, culminating in today's announcement:
CrosPaper can now set videos as your Chromebook's wallpaper!
Nothing is ever simple when creating an app, and since there's no native support for moving wallpapers, we had to create an engine — and editor — to make this possible. But, amazingly, it is possible.
When I first started development on this feature, it was my thought that it'd be a paid feature only. After all, a ton of work and innovation went into making it possible. But once I finished it, I really didn't want it to be locked behind a paywall. So, now all of CrosPaper's users can set videos up to 720p as their wallpaper.
Besides that, we tried to keep the price of Pro features to a minimum. For less than a trip to McDonalds ($1 a month or $10 a year), you get access to way more wallpaper sources, up to 4k video wallpapers, and the ability to store any created wallpapers on Google Photos. That'll save you the time of recreating your favorite Live Wallpapers if ever you change your background.
Speaking of which, you might be wondering how you can create a video background.
How Does it Work?
As stated above, Chrome OS doesn't support Live Wallpapers in any way. So, we essentially had to build a video editor into a Chrome Extension, where you can cut and set your own videos as a wallpaper.
Click the "Create" button in the CrosPaper pop-up and select a video you wish to edit. The entire editing process takes place on your local machine and we never see what you set as a background. That goes for both video and photo wallpapers.
All users can cut a video clip (up to 10 seconds) and watch it play on their desktop every 5 minutes. Pro users get up to 30 seconds and can choose to loop the video up to 5 times. In order to keep your Chromebook performant, after those 5 loops, it will pause for a minimum of 1 minute, then start the loop again.
The intent was to give Chromebook users a "Wallpaper Engine" effect in the vein of the most feature rich Windows wallpaper apps. The coolest part about this system is it was designed using the latest Web APIs, and was tested on both high-end and low-end systems.
Even the Celeron powered Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go can create, edit, and play these wallpapers for hours.
What Else Does it do?
When I first announced the app, I established its core functionality:
"Right-click it to pick it."
Any image you see online is one click away from being your wallpaper.
Besides that, we added support for a wallpaper slideshow, with over 300,000 images available to our Pro members. Recently, we expanded that number by giving Pro members the ability to choose custom sub-reddits as sources, so you could get an infinite amount of new pics by connecting to sub-reddit like r/wallpaper. Or, you could display your fandom by loading up r/StarWarsWallpapers. Whether you want NSFW images is also under your control with a checkbox option.
I could keep talking, but a picture (or in this case a couple thousand pictures) is worth a thousand words. So, here's the CrosPaper intro video:
What's Next?
We have a ton of ideas we want to implement which are intended to take CrosPaper beyond being a fun app. There are some legit ways for productivity to be enhanced through the APIs available, as well as the engine we built.
So, as long as there's some interest, Pro users can expect to get continued support for years to come. And, more experimental features will be coming their way soon, so stay tuned.
And don't worry, the base version of CrosPaper will also see some pretty cool updates that we think fans of customization are really going to like.
That's all for now. I hope you all have fun with the app and let me know if there's anything you'd like to see implemented. I'm having fun doing the impossible on Chrome OS, and I think you will too.
